Our story
We believe every pet deserves a fighting chance.
For decades, veterinary professionals at HEALS have witnessed the heartbreak of families forced to surrender or euthanize beloved pets simply because they couldn’t afford care. We decided to do something about it.
How it started
The bond between a pet and their owner is one of the most powerful forces we know.
Throughout the decades we’ve been practicing veterinary medicine, we’ve witnessed, understood, and appreciated the special sustaining bond that develops between pets and their owners.
But unfortunately, this rewarding experience has a dark side. As veterinary professionals, we also see wrenching heartbreak, stress, and anxiety when pet owners surrender or — even worse — euthanize their beloved companion animals simply because they lack the financial means to pay for medical and surgical care.
These cases affect us profoundly. Inspired by our love of animals, we’re dedicated to doing something about it.
What makes us different
HEALS is truly a unique program.
We don’t just write a check and move on. We stay with families through every step of the process — because the owner needs support just as much as their pet.
No judgment, ever
We don’t prioritize by age, breed, or circumstance. Every animal is a member of a family and deserves a fighting chance.
We go the extra mile
We spend as much time as necessary on every case. Our CEO Bernadette Vinci has spent thousands of hours on the phone working through cases — always going the extra mile.
100% goes to care
Every dollar donated goes directly to veterinary care. Our goal is to end economic euthanasia and animal surrender due to the inability to pay.
Our founder
Driven by a lifetime of witnessing the human-animal bond.
Bernadette Vinci founded HEALS after decades as a veterinary professional watching families face impossible choices. She knew the system needed a safety net — so she built one.
HEALS is truly a unique program. We believe in the human-animal bond, and we truly want to make a difference. Our goal is to end economic euthanasia and animal surrender due to the inability to pay.
We endeavor to keep qualifying owners and their pets together longer and help them enjoy a better quality of life.
Our mission
To end economic euthanasia — one family at a time.
We keep qualifying owners and their pets together longer, and help them enjoy a better quality of life. No family should ever have to say goodbye to their pet simply because they can’t afford to say yes to care.
